The spring that once watered Carthage.
Zaghouan sits beneath the mountain of the same name, and its springs once supplied ancient Carthage through an aqueduct many kilometres long. At the source stands the Roman Water Temple, a graceful semicircle of niches overlooking the valley.
The town is also known for distilling rose water and for kaak warka, delicate ring-shaped pastries filled with almond paste and scented with rose. It's a fine stop on the road south from Tunis.
