Douz

The gateway to the Sahara.

Douz is where the palm groves give way to dunes. Just beyond town, the Grand Erg Oriental begins, and with it the classic Saharan experiences: camel rides at sunset, nights in desert camps and the silence of the sand.

Every winter the town hosts the International Festival of the Sahara, which dates back to 1910 and celebrates nomadic culture with poetry, music, horsemanship and camel races.
