Fortified granaries and hilltop Berber villages.

The country around Tataouine is defined by its ksour: fortified granaries made of ghorfas, vaulted storage rooms stacked several storeys high around a courtyard. Ksar Ouled Soltane is one of the most striking, its honey-coloured vaults climbing towards the sky.

Nearby, the Berber village of Chenini clings to a hilltop, its houses and white mosque built into the rock. It's one of the most memorable landscapes in Tunisia, and still far from the crowds.

Highlights

  • Ksar Ouled Soltane
