Kerkennah Islands

Flat, quiet islands where fishing is still an art.

A ferry ride from Sfax, the Kerkennah Islands feel like another time. The landscape is flat and open, with palm trees, small harbours and a horizon that never ends.

The islanders practise charfia, a traditional fixed fishing technique using palm fronds to guide fish into traps, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2020. Come to slow down, eat fresh octopus and watch a way of life that has endured.

Highlights

  • Charfia fishing

  • Small harbours

  • Fresh seafood

Best for: Slow travel, seafood, authenticity
