Roman villas built underground.
Bulla Regia solved the heat in a way found almost nowhere else in the Roman world: its wealthy residents built a second storey underground. Today you can walk down into these cool villas and see their mosaics still in place on the floors.
The site, near Jendouba in the north-west, is quiet and atmospheric, and pairs naturally with nearby Chemtou and Dougga.
