The best-preserved Roman town in North Africa.
Dougga is one of the great archaeological sites of the Mediterranean, and one of the least crowded. On a hillside above farmland, an entire Roman town survives: a theatre still used for performances, temples, baths, houses and streets you can walk end to end. UNESCO listed it in 1997.
Look for the Capitol, its columns standing against the sky, and the Libyco-Punic mausoleum, a reminder that the town's story began long before Rome. Arrive early and you may have it nearly to yourself.
