A Punic town frozen in time.

Most of Carthage's world was rebuilt by Rome. Kerkouane was not. Abandoned in the middle of the 3rd century BC, this small Punic town on the Cap Bon coast was never reoccupied, leaving its street plan, houses and workshops remarkably legible. UNESCO listed it in 1985.

Look for the private bathrooms with tiled tubs, unusually sophisticated for their time, and the sign of the goddess Tanit set into a floor. The setting, right on the sea, is magnificent.

Highlights

  • Punic houses and baths

  • The sign of Tanit
